States that have placed restrictions on the size of ammunition magazines have fewer mass shootings, according to an analysis conducted for CNN.
High-capacity magazines were found in the Las Vegas shooter's hotel room. The firearms used in the shooting had magazines that could carry more than 100 bullets. Bans on those magazines reduce the amount of rounds that can be fired before reloading to 10 or 15. CNN reported.
"Whether a state has a large capacity ammunition magazine ban is the single best predictor of the mass shooting rate in that state," said Michael Siegel, Boston University community health science professor, who conducted the analysis for CNN.
States with a ban have 63 percent fewer mass shootings, Siegel noted.
His analysis reported:
- States without a ban had more than 0.5 mass shootings per 1 million people.
- States with a ban had more than 0.25 shootings per 1 million people.
The analysis by Siegel found correlation, but is not an explanation of cause, CNN reported, noting that states that ban the large magazines still have problems with enforcing the ban.
Eight states ban the large-capacity magazines. One of those states, Hawaii, only bans handgun magazine size. The analysis was conducted in the other seven states: California, Connecticut, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York between 2012 and 2016.
A separate study released Monday in the Journal of Urban Health found that high-capacity magazines have been used in more than 40 percent of incidents of police being murdered, CNN reported.
Gun control legislation is not a viable solution, according to a statistician for FiveThirtyEight. After conducting research on gun deaths, statistician Leah Libresco said her mind changed on the topic.
