A new study has named Arkansas as having the most sexist culture of any state in the U.S., with Utah, Alabama, West Virginia and Tennessee rounding out the top five.

New Hampshire topped the list of least sexist states, followed by Alaska, Wyoming, Vermont and Connecticut, according to a chart developed by economists at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University and National University Singapore.

"Sexism is highest in the southeast and least extreme in New England and the west," economists Kerwin Kofi Charles, Jonathan Guryan and Jessica Pan said.

In their research, they looked at gender information from years of Census Bureau data and research from the General Social Survey, which compiles the beliefs of Americans on many subjects.

The economists found women had the lowest salaries and wed the youngest in states where residents believe women are not as capable as men and think men and women should practice traditional gender roles.

"Sexism affects women through two channels: one is their own preferences that are shaped by where they grow up, and the other is the sexism they experience in the place they choose to live as adults," the trio said.
