Twenty-one state attorneys general are calling for Congress to further protect election systems from any foreign meddling, the Washington Examiner is reporting.

The bipartisan group made its comments in a letter to Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., chairman of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee and Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee.

"As the latest investigations and indictments make clear, during the 2016 election, hackers within Russia's military intelligence service not only targeted state and local election boards, but also successfully invaded a state election website to steal the sensitive information of approximately 500,000 American voters and infiltrated a company that supplies voting software across the United States," the letter said.

"The allegations in these indictments are extremely troubling. They evidence technologically vulnerable election infrastructures and the existence of a malicious foreign actor eager to exploit these vulnerabilities."

The group asked the lawmakers to prioritize and act on election security legislation, increase funding to support election security improvements and to support the developments of cybersecurity stands for voting systems to prevent future attacks.

The state attorneys general signing the letter included: Xavier Becerra of California, Maura Healy of Massachusetts, Jim Hood of Mississippi and Josh Stein of North Carolina.

"It is our hope that you agree and will take swift action to protect our national legacy of fair and free elections," the letter concluded.
