Almost 60 percent of Americans think special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation should wrap it up within the next six months, according to a new poll released by The Hill.

The Harvard CAPS/Harris survey showed 30 percent of Americans believe the probe should stop immediately, 20 percent say it should wind down within the next three months, and 8 percent say it should wrap up within three to six months.

The poll also found 32 percent say the now year-old probe ought to be allowed to go on indefinitely; 9 percent say it would be all right if it lasted another six months to a year.

"While people narrowly think there was reason to start the investigation, most think it is biased and overwhelmingly support an independent counsel to investigate the investigators," said the poll's co-director Mark Penn, a critic of the investigation and contributor to The Hill.

In other findings, the poll showed:

  • 64 percent believe President Donald Trump should testify in the probe.
  • 53 percent believe surveillance of the Trump campaign by the FBI and the CIA was justified; 47 percent saw the move as unjustified.
  • 52 percent believe the investigations were started "on the basis of significant hard evidence" and not bias.
  • 54 percent believe "bias against President Trump in the FBI played a role in launching investigations."
  • Trump's approval rating is at 44 percent — about the same as it was last month, the same poll showed, per The Hill. His marks have gone up 5 points with Independent voters but fell 3 percent among Republicans.
  • 45 percent believe the American economy is on the right track while 40 percent believe it is on the wrong track. Just 36 percent of those polled think the country as a whole is on the right track.

Full poll results will be posted online later in the week, The Hill reported.
