House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., who was seriously wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice last month, said five law enforcement officers who helped take down the shooter exhibited "selfless and brave actions."
The five officers — David Bailey and Crystal Griner of the U.S. Capitol Police and Nicole Battaglia, Kevin Jobe, and Alexander Jensen of the Alexandria, Va. Police Department — were awarded the Medal of Valor by President Donald Trump in a White House ceremony Thursday.
"I cannot think of a group of individuals more deserving of this award than Special Agents David Bailey, Crystal Griner, and Officers Nicole Battaglia, Kevin Jobe, and Alexander Jensen," said Scalise, who was released from the hospital this week.
"Most people instinctively run from danger, but these officers did not hesitate to put their own lives on the line to run towards it that morning of June 14 to protect the lives of others."
Scalise and two other people at the practice were hit by gunfire when it broke out. Griner was shot in the ankle, while Bailey suffered a non-gunshot injury.
Police on the scene shot and killed the gunman.
"David, Crystal, Nicole, Kevin, and Alexander all have families of their own, yet they courageously confronted and stopped the shooter," Scales said. "Everyone who was at the ballpark that morning owes their lives to the selfless and brave actions of these heroes, and I cannot thank them enough."
