Sharyl Attkisson 'Outraged' Computers Were Hacked

By    |   Monday, 17 June 2013 10:12 PM EDT

CBS News reporter Sharyl Attkisson says she is "outraged" anyone would hack into her personal and work computers, calling the acts "a very serious and disturbing matter."

Appearing on "CBS News This Morning" and later Monday night on Fox News' "O'Reilly Factor," Attkisson said that during the time her computer was hacked the only stories she was working on were Fast and Furious, Benghazi and green energy debacles related to stimulus spending.

Attkisson told Bill O'Reilly that she first noticed strange things happening to her work and personal computers in 2011, but didn't realize she was being hacked until late 2012. She knew something was fishy, she said, when both her work and home computers would turn themselves on one right after the other in the middle of the night while she was asleep creating "a cacophony of computer music."

She had someone check her computers and found they had been compromised, she said, so she informed CBS, which had someone look at the company-issued computer.

"The analysis found very unusual activity buried deep in the computer," she said on CBS. "The unauthorized party accessed the CBS computer at my home on multiple occasions, and specifically in December, they used sophisticated methods to cover their tracks, meaning they tried to remove the indications of their previous unauthorized activity."

Still, she told O'Reilly, no one stole her identity or stole money from her bank accounts even though the hackers had gotten access and could have.

"This is not phishing, this is not malware, this is not ordinary, as someone asked me, old boyfriend trying to look through my files. They know it's not that," Attkisson said.

In fact, she told O'Reilly, she believes she knows who hacked her, but has been advised by CBS lawyers and her personal counsel not to say more. She gave a hint in saying that she found it "outrageous" that someone would hack into the personal computer of a private citizen, be they a journalist or not, and look at personal files.

"It's outrageous," she said.
