Senate races in Iowa, Kansas, and North Carolina are separated by 1 percentage point each among candidates, results of a
Fox News poll released Friday show.
None of the front-runners in the races reaches 50 percent, meaning that the outcomes will most likely be keyed to voters making their decisions as late as Election Day itself, Fox says.
Perhaps the biggest plus for the GOP in each state is that President Barack Obama is extremely unpopular.
"That will motivate Republican voters," the Fox report says.
Voters in each state were surveyed Tuesday through Thursday, with polls having a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
Here's the Fox News poll's breakdown on the Senate races in each state:
Kansas
The survey of 907 voters showed independent Greg Orman holding a one-point edge over Republican Sen. Pat Roberts, 44 percent to 43 percent.
Three weeks ago, Roberts was up by five percentage points, 44 percent to 39 percent.
Libertarian challenger Randall Batson holds 3 percent, while 9 percent told Fox that they were undecided or planned to vote for another candidate.
Orman is ahead because he has strong Democratic support — and he has gained favor with more than half of Sunflower State independents, and even some Republicans, Fox says.
Roberts, who has been in the Senate since 1997, is not faring well among the Republican base, according to the Fox poll: Only 76 percent of GOP voters in the survey said they supported him.
Iowa
In the Hawkeye State, 911 voters were surveyed, and Republican state Sen. Joni Ernst leads Democratic U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley at 45 percent to 44 percent. They are vying to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin.
Both candidates have strong backing from their parties, while independents favor Ernst over Braley, 46 percent to 30 percent.
"It’s a bad sign for Braley that undecided voters disapprove of Obama’s performance," Fox said, and those who have already voted have supported Ernst, 61 percent to 31 percent.
North Carolina
Fox queried 909 voters in the Tar Heel State, finding that Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan is only ahead 43 percent to 42 percent over Republican state Speaker of the House Thom Tillis.
That’s down from last month, when Hagan was up 5 points, 41 percent to 36 percent.
Eighty-six percent of Democrats support the incumbent, according to Fox, while 84 percent of Republicans back Tillis.
Independents, however, are split 36-36 percent. Last month, they backed Tillis by 12 points.
North Carolina polls close at 7:30 ET on election night — and the results could give some indication of which party might end up taking the Senate, Fox reports.
"If you think about the three Southern states in which Republicans are trying to knock off incumbent Democrats — Arkansas, Louisiana and North Carolina — Sen. Hagan is almost certainly the toughest 'out' for the GOP," Republican pollster Daron Shaw told Fox.
