With just a month before the midterm elections, it appears unlikely that Democrats will mount enough upsets to take over the Senate, according to a CBS News poll released on Tuesday regarding four key races.
The Senate is currently controlled by Republicans with 51 seats. Democratic attempts to retake the Senate are complicated by the fact that Republicans have only nine seats up for election, while Democrats have 26.
- In Texas, incumbent Republican Ted Cruz holds a 50-44 percent lead over Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke.
- In Tennessee, Republican Marsha Blackburn has a 50-42 percent advantage over Democrat Phil Bredesen.
- In Arizona, Democrat Kyrsten Sinema has a 47-44 percent lead over Republican Martha McSally.
- Republican challenger Bob Hugin is trying to mount an upset in blue-state New Jersey, but is trailing incumbent Democrat Bob Menendez, 49-39 percent.
The poll also found that registered voters say national issues outweigh local ones and that their vote for the Senate is mainly about the direction of the country. Regarding the contentious Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, most voters said his confirmation would not change how they plan to vote, and among the rest, it will mostly reinforce prior decisions.
The poll interviewed 1,031 registered voters in Texas; 1,010 in Arizona; 704 in New Jersey; 1,002 in Tennessee and was fielded between October 2–5. The margins of error in Texas is 3.9; in New Jersey is 3.6; in Arizona is 3.5; in Tennessee is 3.4.
