The majority of independent voters would rather Republicans keep hold of the Senate, rather than have Democrats take over after the 2020 elections, according to a Hill-HarrisX poll released Tuesday.

While voters were evenly split on whether Republicans or Democrats should control the Senate after the 2020 elections, just over half of independents preferred the GOP in control of the Senate. Voters from the GOP and the Democratic Party would overwhelmingly like to see their own party in control of the upper chamber.

  • 50% of all voters want a Republican-controlled Senate.
  • 50% of all voters want a Democrat-controlled Senate.
  • 54% of independents want a Republican-controlled Senate.
  • 46% of independents want a Democrat-controlled Senate.
  • 94% of Republicans want a Republican-controlled Senate.
  • 92% of Democrats want a Democrat-controlled Senate.

Four Republican senators have announced their retirement in the past year: Sens. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., and Pat Roberts, R-Kan.

The poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters, 370 Democrats, 320 Republicans, and 290 independents, from Sept. 28-29, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points overall, and +/- 5.8 percentage points for partisan voters.
