Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's comments calling out Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch regarding the court's discussions on the first major abortion case during President Donald Trump's time in office were "totally irresponsible and dangerous," ex-House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday.

"He was in front of a crowd," Gingrich said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "They were fanatically committed to the maximum opportunity to kill children, and they were all revved up. He was revved up and he got carried away and what he said is totally irresponsible and dangerous."

While speaking to protesters outside the Supreme Court, Schumer said Kavanaugh and Gorsuch "won't know what hit" them if they rule in favor of abortion restrictions. The court is weighing a Louisiana law that requires doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital after a federal judge found that just one of Louisiana's three abortion clinics would remain open if the law is allowed to take effect.

"We live in a country where you start [attacking] a senior politician by name, attacking Supreme Court justices, that's actually posing a danger to those justices," Gingrich said, pointing out that Chief Justice John Roberts has called Schumer's remarks dangerous.

A Schumer spokesman said the senator was referring to the "political price" Republicans will pay for putting Kavanaugh and Gorsuch on the court, but Gingrich called that a "lie."

"Virtually any person who pays attention knows it's a lie," said Gingrich. "Schumer made a mistake. He should apologize for it and he should admit it's totally out of bounds."
