Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation should "never have happened" as it was a "two-year waste of taxpayer time and dollars," and Democrats and members of the liberal media owe Americans an apology, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Monday.
"They spent over $25 million on this just to find out that there was nothing there," Sanders told NBC News' "Today" anchor Savannah Guthrie. "This should never happen to another president, and we want to make sure that the institution of the president is protected.”
Sanders also commented that she does not think Trump has "any problem" with releasing Mueller's full report.
"He's more than happy for any of this stuff to come out, because he knows exactly what did and what didn't happen and now frankly the rest of America knows," Sanders said.
Attorney General William Barr's statement on Mueller's report came because "they said they couldn't make a decision one way or the other," said Sanders. "The way the process works is then they leave that up to the attorney general...this wasn't based on just their own ideas and their own thinking. It was based on Mueller's investigation."
She also said she thinks the American people deserved better, after Guthrie asked her if she thought Mueller deserved better treatment from Trump.
"They didn't deserve for the election of this president to try to be taken down," said Sanders. "I think Democrats and the liberal media owe the president and they owe the American people an apology. They wasted two years and created a massive disruption and distraction from things that impact everyone's day-to-day life.”
