Sara Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, gave President Donald Trump and his wife Melania a message of support Monday, saying that they both endure the ire of the press despite having the support of the public.
While walking to Marine One on the tarmac of Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv, Trump was recorded talking with the Netanyahus by Tel Aviv's local news network, Channel 2, telling Sara Netanyahu that his wife is a fan of hers.
"I love her, I'm also her fan," Sara Netanyahu said, according to The Washington Post. "I talk everyplace about her, how great she is, how great you are."
Her husband added, "I can testify to that."
Sara Netanyahu then said, "Because the majority of the people in Israel, unlike the media, they love us. So we tell them how you are great, and they love you."
To which Trump replied, "We have something very much in common,"
"We have a lot in common," Trump replied.
"Very much in common," Sara Netanyahu said.
The prime minister added, "Sounds familiar."
Longtime associates of both Donald and Melania Trump told Politico that the first lady is concerned about how the two are portrayed by the media. Her friend and former agent Paolo Zampolli, who introduced the two in 1998, said she "feels a kind of protection" for the president.
"The leaks bother her. She believes a lot of people are more interested in serving themselves than him," he added.
"She was really concerned that Spicer was not doing a good job, that they were not proactive in defending the president," one anonymous presidential adviser said. "The leaks bother her. She believes a lot of people are more interested in serving themselves than him."
