Ryan: Chick-fil-A Represents Free Speech

By    |   Friday, 24 August 2012 12:56 PM EDT

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan offered a clever defense of the Chick-fil-A restaurant Thursday.

In a word association game, an interviewer with Virginia’s WDBJ TV station asked Ryan, “Chick-fil-a?” Ryan’s reply: “Good chicken, free people exercising their free speech rights.”

Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy reiterated the company’s opposition to gay marriage several weeks ago, leading gay rights activists to call for a boycott of the restaurants. In response, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee called for a Chick-fil-A appreciation day.

Ryan’s running mate Mitt Romney has stayed out of the conflict, but his campaign spent $500 at a Chick-fil-A in Atlanta last month.
