Rudy Giuliani's business dealings with two men indicted on campaign finance charges last week have been under scrutiny by U.S. counterintelligence agents since early this year, a Manhattan attorney said Wednesday.
Kenneth McCallion, whose Ukrainian clients include former Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, told USA Today the agents approached him in February or March.
They asked whether Giuliani, President Donald Trump's personal attorney, had business dealings with Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, he said.
"They were interested in the nature of any business dealings with them," McCallion said.
He added that he was "asked a lot of questions by FBI and other counterintelligence investigators who were looking at Giuliani's comings and goings in Ukraine and business dealings."
Parnas, a native of Ukraine, and the Russian-born Fruman were arrested last week as they boarded a flight out of the country with one-way tickets and charged with conspiring to buy political influence through thwarting federal campaign finance laws and channeling foreign dollars to U.S. political candidates and committees.
The men, who now live in Florida, allegedly had key roles in connecting Giuliani with Ukrainian officials as the former New York City mayor sought information about Hunter Biden's financial dealings.
Biden, 49, is the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate.
Parnas and Fruman each are being held on $1 million bond and are scheduled to appear federal court in New York City on Thursday, USA Today reports.
McCallion told the newspaper he had no legal or business dealings with Giuliani.
Giuliani, who has said Parnas and Fruman are his clients, told USA Today Tuesday that he had "no such knowledge" of being under investigation by federal officials.
Asked whether he was aware that agents had questioned McCallion about his ties to Parnas and Fruman, Giuliani responded, "No."
