Romney: Obama Poking Republicans' Eye Over Amnesty Plan

Sunday, 16 November 2014 11:44 AM EST

President Barack Obama is poking Republicans in the eye rather than trying to work with them over immigration reform, 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said Sunday.

Appearing on "Face the Nation," Romney said Obama and Democrats in Congress should "take a breath" before enacting controversial legislation that Romney sees only as a temporary solution anyway.

Noting that Obama has repeatedly said that his policies were on the ballot, Romney said voters responded in the midterms that they are not happy about Obama's policies.

Obama should let the newly elected GOP House and Senate come together with legislation to put on his desk, Romney said. "And he can veto it or not, but let the Congress and let this election have its say."

Instead, he added, Obama is "poking in the eye of the Republican leaders in Congress, and he's making it more difficult for there to be a permanent solution to this issue."

If Obama signs an executive order granting legal status to up to 5 million illegals before year's end, it would only be a "temporary solution" since a future Republican president could reverse it, he said.

Romney cited his own time as governor of Massachusetts, when he had to work with a Democrat-controlled legislature. Obama needs to make the same arrangements with Republicans set to lead Congress in January, he said.

Responding to the latest reported beheading of an American by the Islamic State (ISIS), Romney said America and the West now are paying for Obama's twin mistakes of not leaving American troops behind in Iraq and of not arming the Syrian "moderate" rebels sooner.
