Rove Declares Summer Ad 'Stalemate' in Presidential Race

Thursday, 26 July 2012 09:43 AM EDT

Political strategist Karl Rove says Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama have fought each other to a “stalemate” in the presidential campaign, and the voters who will actually decide the election won’t be paying attention until the fall.

“Obama has spoken, the Romney forces have spoken. Romney’s allies have spoken, Obama’s allies have spoken, and it’s been fought to a stalemate,” Rove told Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly Wednesday, suggesting that Americans are no longer paying attention to campaign ads.

“The people who make up their minds in this election and will decide this election, independent voters, are going to make up their minds in September and October,” Rove said.

Still, Rove said independent voters are “collecting information now,” which he suggested may be the only reason for both sides to keep up their ad campaigns through the summer.

Rove, who’s own super PAC Crossroads GPS is backing Romney, said polls show that despite three months of hammering Romney with negative ads Obama has gained little traction.

“The American people are not dumb. They know he is doing this, this small ball, dirty little gutter campaign, because he doesn’t have a record to run on,” said Rove, who engineered George W. Bush’s rise to the presidency in 2000.
