Critics: Rolling Stone Writer Didn't Apologize to Fraternity

By    |   Sunday, 05 April 2015 11:16 PM EDT

Rolling Stone retracted its discredited campus rape story and the writer apologized, but Twitter lit up over one group whom she neglected to mention: the fraternity whose members were accused of a brutal gang rape.

"I want to offer my deepest apologies: to Rolling Stone’s readers, to my Rolling Stone editors and colleagues, to the UVA community, and to any victims of sexual assault who may feel fearful as a result of my article," Sabrina Rubin Erdely wrote Sunday in her first public comments since problems were exposed with the story in late November.

The apology was issued at the same time Rolling Stone officially retracted the story and replaced it with a scathing report on the magazine's poor journalistic practices from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

In the story, a female student who was given the pseudonym "Jackie" accused seven male students of the University of Virginia of raping her at a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity initiation.

Erdely failed to talk to members of the fraternity or find Jackie's date who supposedly initiated the attack. Her story later fell apart under scrutiny, but the story already had been published. The fraternity was suspended and all campus Greek activities were shut down.
