The co-founder of Android thinks artificial intelligence will become so advanced that it controls every connected device around us.

"If you have computing that is as powerful as this could be, you might only need one," Andy Rubin said during this week's Bloomberg Technology Conference, according to The Daily Mail. "It might not be something you carry around; it just has to be conscious."

Rubin said a combination of quantum computing and artificial intelligence may eventually lead to every device with an Internet connection being controlled by robots.

"That's where robotics come in," he said. "Robots are walking mobile sensors, who can sense their environment and interact and learn from those interactions."

Several tech companies have been working on artificial intelligence for years. But the technology has its critics, including physicist Stephen Hawking and business magnate Elon Musk — both signed a letter with more than 1,000 engineers last summer warning about the dangers posed by AI.

Robots have replaced 60,000 workers in a Chinese factory where Apple and Samsung products are made, while Microsoft's AI bot was shut down last month after making inappropriate comments on Twitter.
