Robert Wagner is now being considered as a “person of interest” in his wife Natalie Wood’s 1981 death, Los Angeles sheriff’s investigators revealed.
There has always been a veil of mystery surrounding the unexplained drowning of the Hollywood actress while sailing with husband Wagner and actor Christopher Walken off the coast of California's Catalina Island, ABC News reported.
At the time it was ruled that she had drowned, then that was amended in 2012 to “drowning and other undetermined factors” after new investigations revealed that Wood had bruises on her body that “appeared fresh and could have occurred before she entered the water.”
Now the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is saying that Wagner, who is 87-years-old and reported as the last person to have seen Wood alive, is viewed as a “person of interest” in the case, the New York Daily News reported.
Speaking in an interview in an upcoming CBS "48 Hours,” Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lieutenant John Corina said Wagner’s new status was established through ongoing investigations.
“As we've investigated the case over the last six years, I think he's more of a person of interest now,” he said. “I mean, we know now that he was the last person to be with Natalie before she disappeared.”
Corina said Wagner has refused to speak to investigators since the case was reopened in 2011 and Corina said he believes Wagner may be withholding information, noting that his account of what unfolded that fateful day conflicted with witness reports.
“I think he's constantly changed his story a little bit. And his version of events just don't add up,” Corina told “48 Hours.”
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Detective Ralph Hernandez said Wood’s body resembled that of an assault victim when they discovered it.
The problem, he said, is that “we have not been able to prove this was a homicide… And we haven't been able to prove that this was an accident, either,” CBS noted.
