Los Angeles County Sheriff's investigators on Monday night said actor Robert Wagner’s story regarding Natalie Wood’s death, “doesn’t add up,” according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
"Some of the things we found that [Wagner] did afterwards, or didn't do, in the boat, cause us to say, 'This doesn't make any sense,'" Lt. John Corina said during a press conference. "We're at the end of the investigation. We're at a standstill, so we thought we'd give it one more shot to the public."
Wood, known for high-profile roles in "West Side Story," "Miracle on 34th Street" and "Rebel Without a Cause," died in 1981 at age 43 while boating off Catalina Island with Wagner, Christopher Walken and two others. The L.A. County Coroner's office originally declared her death an "accidental drowning," but amended it in 2013 to "drowning and other undetermined factors."
Officials said her wounds – bruising on her right forearm, left wrist and right knee, a scratch on her neck, and a superficial scrape on her forehead – could have been from an assault before the drowning.
"[The bruises] were probably caused by another person," Corina said. "I can't say who caused the injuries."
Wagner has refused to talk with investigators, but is a person of interest "because he was the last one with Natalie Wood. And somehow she ends up in the water and drowns," Corina said.
Since reopening the case in 2011, investigators have received more than 100 tips including witnesses who told detectives they heard noises coming from the boat the night of Wood's disappearance.
