Actor Robert De Niro on Wednesday pleaded for special counsel Robert Mueller to keep speaking up.

In an op-ed published in The New York Times, De Niro said the country needs to hear Mueller's voice, "because this is the report your country asked you to do, and now you must give it authority and clarity without, if I may use the term, obstruction."

Mueller earlier in the day made his first public statements on his probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, saying Justice Department policy prevented him from bringing charges against a sitting president or filing sealed charges, telling reporters it was "not an option we would consider."

But he also said the two-year investigation did not clear the president of improper behavior and pointed out other ways to hold Trump accountable.

De Niro argued Mueller's report is getting skewed because of rhetoric from President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr.

"Your life has been a shining example of bravely and selflessly doing things for the good of our country," De Niro wrote. "I urge you to leave your comfort zone and do that again. You are the voice of the Mueller report. Let the country hear that voice."
