The Republican National Committee raised more than $100 million in the first nine months of this year, setting a record for the highest amount and quickest raised funds in a non-presidential election year.

McClatchy obtained a new report to be released later this week that says the record pace is largely due to large numbers of small-dollar donors responding to appeals from President Donald Trump.

The money collected gives the GOP a significant cash advantage over the Democrats, with almost twice as much raised through August and nearly seven times as much money in the bank.

So far this year small donations have made up almost 60 percent, more than $44 million of the $75 million the RNC raised in direct contributions.

The RNC has used the money to hire state directors in 17 states nationwide in what the GOP says will be the most expansive midterm field program ever.

The record pace "shows that our base is rallying around what our president put forward in terms of his agenda, RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel said in Denver last week, according to The Denver Post. "I think we're in the best place we've ever been as a party."

"This month's numbers show once again that Americans of all backgrounds approve of the direction our country is headed under Republican leadership," RNC Finance Chairman Steve Wynn added, according to McClatchy. "We are grateful to our generous donors who allow us to continue to expand our Republican majorities."

In the Senate, Democrats need a net gain of three seats in the midterm election to win back a majority, while in the House, the GOP has 240 House seats, with 218 needed for a majority.
