The Republican National Committee is withdrawing its support for Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, a senior party official told Politico Tuesday.

The official was "briefed on the decision," according to the report.

The committee is stepping away from a joint agreement to raise funds with and is canceling a program for sending canvassers into the field before the special election on Dec. 12.

In addition, the RNC will no longer transfer any funds to Moore's race, according to the report.

RNC Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel is expected to brief other committee members on a conference call Tuesday, Politico reports.

The committee's moves come as top Republican leaders Tuesday called on Moore to quit the contest against Democrat Doug Jones after two women alleged that the former Alabama Supreme Court judge groped them as teenagers.

Moore has called the reports false.

House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin said Moore "should step aside," saying that the allegations "are credible."

In addition, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky suggested that Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whose appointment by President Donald Trump in January created the vacancy, should become a write-in candidate.

"The name being most often discussed may not be available, but the Alabamian who would fit that standard would be the attorney general," McConnell told The Wall Street Journal. "He's totally well-known and is extremely popular in Alabama.

"That obviously would be a big move for him and for the president," he said.

McConnell said that Trump would meet with Republican leaders on the matter later this week.

In response to the GOP attacks, Moore posted this tweet:

According to Politico, internal polling by the RNC last week showed him leading Jones, a former U.S. attorney, by just 2 percentage points.
