Illegal immigration is hurting the wages of Americans as immigrants come into the country willing to work for less in low-skilled jobs, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum said Sunday on CNN's
"State of the Union."
Responding to comments from former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush that, "Immigration is the engine of economic vitality," Santorum said immigration must be done "the right way" to be effective.
The United States should focus on bringing in people with needed skills to "gin up and encourage our economy," he said.
Instead, more than a million people a year are coming in, the overwhelming majority of whom are lower-skilled or unskilled and they fill up a labor pool which is not seeing booming growth, Santorum said.
"There are fewer Americans working today who were born in America than there were 15 years ago," he told CNN. "All of the new jobs being created are going to people who were not born here."
Asked whether he believes climate change is a "hoax," Santorum asked whether man is having a significant impact and, if so, could anything be done to stop climate change.
"Clearly, no," he said. "Why would you do something with people admitting that even if you do something, it won't make a difference?" he asked.
