Despite controversy, Richard Grenell is proving to be a success as U.S. ambassador to Germany, Politico is reporting.
The outspoken Grenell has antagonized Berlin’s political establishment over issues ranging from Germany’s military spending to its commercial ties with Iran, the website noted. He has been dubbed “the little Trump” by his critics.
But Grenell offers no apologies for his style.
“I open up every conversation by saying I speak very frankly to friends, and the Germans are our friends,” he said. “There’s an overwhelming appreciation of being able to speak honestly and openly. Sometimes, there will also be people who respond very respectfully, ‘I like your frankness, so let me also be frank in my reaction,’ and then they push back on U.S. policy. I enjoy this dialogue.”
And his style is getting noticed.
“That’s just how he is,” said a German MP from Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats. “Some people have difficulty accepting that.”
And Juliane Smith, a national security adviser to former Vice President Joe Biden added: “I think the White House looks at Grenell and sees a successful ambassador. They take no issue with his style...”
Among his successes was his recommendation that Germany companies in Iran “wind down operations immediately.” His comments brought criticism, but now every Germany company of note has pulled out of Iran, according to Politico
Grenell had been the longest serving U.S. spokesman at the United Nations. He had been first appointed by President George W. Bush in 2001.
