Condoleezza Rice Task Force Says Problem Schools Hurt Nation's Security

Monday, 19 March 2012 04:16 PM EDT

WASHINGTON — A task force led by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former New York city schools Chancellor Joel Klein warns the nation's security is at risk if America's schools don't improve.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the findings, which are to be released Tuesday. It cautions that ill-prepared students affect national security because the U.S. depends on human capital to compete globally.

The report says the State Department and U.S. intelligence agencies face critical shortfalls in the number of foreign language speakers. And, it says, 75 percent of young adults don't qualify for the military because they are physically unfit, have criminal records or inadequate levels of education.

The Council on Foreign Relations organized the task force.
