China remains involved in economic actions that are negative to the U.S. economy, but a "tit for tat" tariff war is not the way to deal with them, Rep. Will Hurd said Friday after the U.S. more than doubled tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese exports, Rep. Will Hurd said Friday.
"Ultimately we should think of a tariff like a sales tax," the Texas Republicans told CNN's "New Day." "it's going to be more expensive for Americans to buy products. That's why this has a long-term impact on the U.S. economy."
Another way to fight back would be to focus on competing with China in the markets.
"We should be working with Mexico and Canada on countering the threat in China," said Hurd. "[Other] steps we should be taking, if a U.S. company can't do something in China then a Chinese company can't do that in the United States of America. That's simple reciprocity."
The U.S. must remember that China's government is authoritarian and does not care about the pain its citizens may be suffering.
"They are going to be able to withstand pain a lot longer than the U.S. economy can," said Hurd. "You don't want to get into a tit-for-tat with an authoritarian government."
Herd also called for a ban on U.S.-manufactured integrated circuits on cell phones, after ZTE has been found to be in violation of several international treaties.
"That would have killed ZTE," said Hurd. "It's one of their most important companies. That would show we are being tough and we are not going to allow these kinds of practices by the Chinese government."
