About a dozen sign-carrying protesters stood outside The Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia as it reopened – 13 days after its owner declined to serve White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
One protester held a sign saying: "We Shall Overcome…Democrats." Others waved American and Virginia flags, according to a report in The Roanoke Times.
The restaurant reopened on Thursday. Those who went inside said there appeared to a be private gathering taking place.
Some protesters said they hope The Red Hen goes out of business, while others demanded a public apology to Sanders from the owner.
Protester Jeff Hulbert told the newspaper it’s probably been "nothing but chaos" for the people working at the restaurant. However, he added: "We want to make a point that this place should be a place where all people can enjoy themselves."
And Paul Brockman told WSLS-TV: "Actions have consequences, so some of the consequences (are) people like us being out here to alert the general public of what they did and let the marketplace decide."
"We may have our differences, right, left, Democrat or Republican whatever. But the place for that is in politics, it's at the ballot box, it's not at a retail establishment."
Sanders said she was booted from the restaurant because she works for President Donald Trump And the restaurant owner Stephanie Wilkinson told The Washington Post she had no regrets asking Sanders and her family to leave.
