Rand Paul: Lawmakers Are 'Wimps' When It Comes to Social Security

(Fox News' "Happening Now")

Washington lawmakers are "basically wimps" who are unwilling to say what needs to be done to fight cuts to Social Security, Sen. Rand Paul, who spoke out in a two-hour filibuster against the budget that passed the House and Senate, said Tuesday.

"People are upset about the government taking money from Social Security and spending it on immediate concerns that have nothing to do with Social Security," the Kentucky Republican and GOP presidential candidate told Fox News' "Happening Now."

"This is why we're bankrupt; the right and the left bankrupted this country."

The right wants more money for the military and the left wants more money for welfare, and when they get together, they "are willing to spend money on anything," Paul said. "For Social Security I would fix it by gradually raising age. Everybody knows the age has to go up. Let the age go up a couple months every year for the next 20 years and that fixes two-thirds of the problem with Social Security."

But the problem, he continued, is that somebody has to "have the guts to fix it," but most lawmakers are "unwilling to say this is what it needs to fix the problem."

And in Washington, the priority should be to spend only what comes in, which is a very simple proposition.

"Every American family does that," he said. "I don't know why government shouldn't do that. We bring in $3 trillion. That is an enormous amount of money. All I'm asking is we spend $3 trillion. Break it down, what should we spend it on, we should spend it on what the Constitution allows."
