7.1 Magnitude Quake Strikes off Alaska

Friday, 02 September 2011 07:19 AM EDT

WASHINGTON  - A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Friday in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska at a shallow 6.2 mile depth, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Tsunami warning has been canceled for parts of the Aleutian Islands of Alaska after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Pacific Ocean.

Officials canceled the warning early Friday morning after only a small wave was recorded in the remote community of Atka.

State emergency officials said some Atka residents had evacuated to higher ground when the all clear was given.

The USGS says the earthquake struck in the waters at about 6:55 a.m. Eastern, and there are no initial reports of injuries or damage.

The tsunami warning is in effect for coastal areas of Alaska from Unimak Pass to Amchitka Pass. The areas are very remote and not heavily populated, according to Jessica Sigala, geophysicist with the USGS in Golden, Colo.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it did not see a threat of a widespread destructive tsunami from the quake.

The quake was 22.1 miles deep, the USGS said.
