President Donald Trump's approval rating has fallen five percentage points over the last month to 35 percent, matching his lowest level yet, according to a CNN poll released on Sunday.
The survey erases a January bump the president received and brings his approval rating all the way back to its December level, which marked Trump's lowest approval rating in CNN polling since taking office in January 2017. Fifty-eight percent disapprove of the president's performance.
Another poll released on Sunday showed similar results, with 38 percent approving and 60 percent disapproving in a survey conducted by USA Today and Suffolk University's Political Research Center. This also marked Trump's lowest approval rating in that survey since becoming president.
Other results from the CNN survey include:
- Trump's approval rating among self-identified Republicans has also fallen to its lowest level at 80 percent, one point below his previous low mark registered last September.
- Among independents, the president's approval is at 35 percent, while among Democrats it is just five percent.
- Among women, just 29 percent approve of Trump's performance, significantly below the president's 42 percent approval among men.
- Those under 35 years of age are also much less likely to support Trump, at 22 percent, compared with 43 percent of those who are over 50 years of age.
- The president's approval among whites is 43 percent, while among non-whites it is just 23 percent.
- Trump's approval rating is by far the lowest among those of previous presidents at this stage in their administration. The previous worst mark was 47 percent by both Ronald Reagan at this point of his presidency in 1982 and by Jimmy Carter in 1978. The only other modern president with an approval rating below 50 percent at this point in their administration was Barack Obama at 49 percent.
- Only 33 percent approve of Trump's handling of gun policy following the massacre at the Florida high school, while 54 percent do not approve and 12 percent said they have not made up their minds.
- Among those in gun-owning households, 52 percent approve of his handling of this issue, while among those in households which do not own a gun, his approval on this issue is at 17 percent.
The CNN Poll was conducted by SSRS between February 20 and 23 among a random national sample of 1,016 adults reached on landlines or cellphones by a live interviewer. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
The USA Today/Suffolk University poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters nationwide between February 20 and 24. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
