Most Russians view President Donald Trump unfavorably, according to a new poll from Russian Public Opinion Research, The Hill reported Saturday.
The poll, conducted on July 10, showed 71 percent of the 1,600 Russian adults responding had an unfavorable view of Trump, while 10 percent held a favorable view of the president and nearly 20 percent saying they had no opinion.
When responding to adjectives to describe their view of Trump, replies were as follows:
- Self-centered, 77 percent
- Dangerous, 58 percent
- Charismatic, 49 percent
- Strong, 34 percent
- Trustworthy, 16 percent
Poll results were announced before Trump's bilateral summit on Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. The poll also took place before Friday's announcement by U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that 12 Russian military officers had been indicted and charged with meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
The poll also showed that, in advance of Trump's meeting with Putin, slightly more than half of respondents would like to see political ties with the U.S. strengthened. Fifty-one percent responded they would like to see more cooperation with the U.S., while 9 percent wanted to reduce ties and 27 percent wanted relations to remain unchanged.
A majority, 59 percent, felt nothing would fundamentally change after the meeting between Trump and Putin, but 40 percent hoped relations between Russia and the U.S. would improve as a result of the meeting.
Though Russia's government is authoritarian, public opinion of Russian citizens does play into making policy, according to The Conversation, an organization describing itself as an independent non-profit that's part of a global network of newsrooms "committed to information transparency and credibility."
The poll has a margin of error of ±2.5 percentage points.
