A poll conducted in June but released Friday found that a majority of voters are confident that November's midterm elections will be conducted "fairly and free of fraud, tampering, or irregularities."
According to the poll, commissioned by New York University Law School's Brennan Center for Justice and the R Street Institute, more than 3 in 4 Democrats and more than half of independents are confident the midterms and future elections will be conducted "fairly" and reliably.
Just 3 in 10 Republicans agreed.
However, Republicans' confidence rose by 21 percentage points when they were presented with information about existing election safeguards. Confidence among Democrats and independents rose as well when shown the information.
The poll's participants were also asked how much confidence they had in the 2020 presidential election results.
While two-thirds are "broadly confident" in the results, and do not believe that widespread fraud, tampering, or interference occurred in that election, "belief that widespread fraud occurred is concentrated among Republicans," according to the press release.
The poll was conducted June 2-13 and surveyed 950 registered voters via phone, online and text message. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
