CBS Poll: 87 Percent of GOP Voters Approve of Migrant Relocations

By    |   Monday, 26 September 2022 01:50 PM EDT

According to a new poll from CBS News, the vast majority of Republican voters, almost 9-in-10, expressed approval for the recent busing and flying of asylum seekers from southern states to northern areas.

When asked if they approve or disapprove of "Republican governors sending migrants to Democratic areas," voters were largely split along partisan lines:

  • Republicans: 87% approve, 13% disapprove
  • Democrats: 20% approve, 80% disapprove
  • Independents: 48% approve, 52% disapprove

The most common reason for approving the sending of asylum seekers to other areas was because it "draws attention to the issue," followed by "forces other states to handle the issue."

Just over half said they approve because it's an "effective way to handle illegal immigration," and less than half said because it's "helpful to the migrants."

Voters were also divided over the importance of immigration as an issue in the upcoming midterm elections, with Republicans far more likely to rate it as an important issue than Democrats or independents:

  • Republicans: 86% say immigration is "very important"
  • Democrats: 40% say immigration is "very important"
  • Independents: 57% say immigration is "very important"

The Battleground Tracker from CBS News surveyed 2,253 people from September 21-23 with a margin of error of +/- 2.3 percentage points for approval of migrant transport, +/- 2.8 percentage points for importance of immigration when voting, and +/- 3.3 percentage points for reasons for approving of the transportation of asylum seekers.
