Fifty-two percent of Republican voters in Alabama favor Tommy Tuberville, while 40% support former Senator and Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the GOP runoff election for the U.S. Senate, a new Cygnal poll reveals.

Tuberville, the former head football coach at Auburn University, will face Sessions in the March 31 runoff.

"Starting at a 12-point deficit is going to be a big hurdle for Sessions to get over, especially if he continues to draw the ire – and tweets – of the president," said Chris Kratzer, Cygnal's VP of Research and Analysis.

Here are how the results of the Alabama poll break down:

  • 45% agree President Donald Trump is opposed to Sessions in the Senate race, while 15.5% disagree.
  • 45.% of those polled say they live in a suburban area, compared to 43% who live in a rural area.

The poll, conducted March 6-8, surveyed 645 likely Republican voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.86 percentage points.
