Trafalgar Poll: Most Voters Would Vote GOP If Gas Prices Rose

By    |   Thursday, 13 October 2022 02:33 PM EDT

Most voters said in a recent poll from The Trafalgar Group that rising gas prices would make them "more likely to vote Republican" in the upcoming midterm elections.

The survey asked voters: "How would rising gas prices impact your vote in the upcoming 2022 midterm elections?"

  • 54.4 % said they would be "more likely to vote Republican."
  • 32.8% said they would be "more likely to vote Democrat."
  • 12.7% said they were "not sure" how this would impact their vote.

"These numbers shed light on President Biden’s desperate attempts to hide from voters the impact of his administration's far-left energy policies," said Mark Meckler, president of the Convention of States, which partnered with Trafalgar Group to produce the poll. "From recklessly depleting our nation’s strategic oil reserves, to pressuring OPEC countries to postpone cuts in oil production through the November elections, it’s clear that they’re playing politics with our pocketbooks. That is both bad politics and bad policy."

The results were clearly split down party lines, with the vast majority of Republican voters saying they would be more likely to vote for the GOP and the vast majority of Democrats saying the same about their own party.

However, most independent voters were more likely to vote Republican if gas prices rose:

  • 55.5% of independents would be "more likely to vote Republican."
  • 21.3% would be "more likely to vote Democrat."
  • 23.2% are "not sure" about the impact rising gas prices would have on their vote.

Trafalgar surveyed 1,079 likely general election voters from October 8-11, 2022 with a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points.
