Poll: Dems' Lead Shrinks to 1 Point on Generic Ballot

By    |   Wednesday, 19 October 2022 10:41 AM EDT

With three weeks to go until Election Day, Democrats' lead over Republicans has shrunk to just 1 point on the generic congressional ballot, according to a new Politico-Morning Consult poll.

According to the poll, 45% of registered voters surveyed said they would vote for the Democrat in their congressional district, versus the 44% who said they would vote for the Republican.

Some 11% said they were unsure or did not have an opinion.

The gap between Democrats and Republicans on the generic congressional ballot has narrowed in recent weeks, as the Democrats' summer momentum falters and some worry that the party's enthusiasm maxed out too early for election season.

A poll from Politico-Morning Consult conducted earlier this month indicated Democrats had a 3-point advantage over Republicans, while a poll from late September showed Republicans were behind by 2 points. In Politico-Morning Consult polls from July and August, Democrats were up by 4 points over Republicans.

In competitive districts, Republicans are leading Democrats by 5 points, according to a CNN poll from last week. The GOP only needs to pick up five seats in those competitive districts to win back control of the House.

In more bad news for Democrats, President Joe Biden's approval rating hovered near the lowest level of his presidency, as inflation topped the list of voter concerns, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll from Tuesday.

Unchanged from the week prior, the poll found 40% of Americans approve of Biden's job performance.

Public opinion polls have shown that voters are very concerned about the economy, which has seen the highest rates of inflation under Biden in 40 years.

Approximately 1 in 3 respondents in the Reuters/Ipsos poll said the economy is the biggest problem America is facing.

The Politico-Morning Consult poll released Wednesday was conducted Oct. 14-16 and surveyed 2,005 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
