Poll: 49 Percent Would Pick Third-Party Candidate in '24

By    |   Tuesday, 06 June 2023 08:51 AM EDT

A new poll released Tuesday shows that 49% of American voters would consider voting for a third-party candidate if President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are in a rematch in 2024, with most saying they'd choose Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

The poll, conducted by NewsNation/DDHQ on May 25-26 of 1,000 voters, showed Sanders with 21% of the voters, former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., at 10% and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., at 7%, reports The Hill.

However, 43% said they would choose someone else as the third-party candidate.

Both Cheney and Manchin have not ruled out launching third-party bids for the presidency, but Sanders has said he will support Biden in 2024.

Cheney has said repeatedly she will do what it takes to keep Trump from being elected again, but this also likely means she'll pass on a third-party bid if Trump prevails in the Republican primary election.

Manchin said Sunday that he is "not ruling anything" in or out when it comes to launching a third-party bid.

He is reportedly at the top of the list for the bipartisan political group "No Labels," which is pushing for a "unity ticket" in the 2024 race.

The new poll comes as both Biden and Trump have seen high disapproval ratings, and shows 53% of voters saying they disapprove of how Biden is handling his job, with 47% saying they approve.

Trump's ratings among Republicans remain high, and he's expected to be in a rematch with Biden, even while the field of candidates for the GOP nomination continues to grow with former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Vice President Mike Pence expected to enter the race this week.
