Phyllis Schlafly: Immigration Reform Would Destroy GOP

By    |   Wednesday, 05 February 2014 03:22 PM EST

If Republicans allow immigration reform to pass, it will mean the end of the party because those who would become citizens do not share conservative values, Phyllis Schlafly tells Newsmax.

"The majority of immigrants coming in do not share Republican principles of limited government, balanced budgets, cutting government back to size, and what it ought to do," Schlafly says in an exclusive interview with Newsmax TV.

"All the polls show that they are coming from countries where they believe in big government, they don't believe in the conservative Republican view of limited government at all, they want government to be there to take care of them, solve their problems, and that's not the kind of country that we want or which built us to the most prosperous, freest land in the world," she explains.

While the founder of the Eagle Forum and constitutional lawyer says that "we want to be polite and nice to [the illegal immigrants]" because "they are human beings," at the same time she says that it can't be ignored that "they've broken our laws."

"We believe in being a government of laws, not men," she says. "If you let them stay, they have achieved what they wanted by breaking the law, which is residence, approved residence in this country, and we can't do that."

Schlafly says that Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin have ruined their chances of being presidential contenders because of the immigration measures they have pushed.

"Rubio and Ryan were both considered to be national contenders to be on the national ticket, but they've blown their chance," she adds. "They have ruined any shot at the White House, because a lot of people just simply don't realize how strongly the grassroots feel about that."
