Perry Selling T-Shirts With His Mug Shot to Raise Political Cash

Saturday, 23 August 2014 07:24 AM EDT

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, facing abuse-of-power charges, started selling T-shirts featuring his mug shot to raise money for his political committee.

RickPAC_Donate_Wanted-Tshirt_400x400_v1-1.jpgThe shirts, which went on sale yesterday, show the Texas Republican's picture with "WANTED" stamped above it and "FOR SECURING THE BORDER AND DEFEATING DEMOCRATS" underneath.

On the back, there’s a picture of Travis County, Texas, District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg's mug shot, with the word "GUILTY" stamped above it.

Perry, 64, is accused of overstepping his gubernatorial authority by threatening to veto the budget for a public- corruption office unless Lehmberg, a Democrat who led the unit, quit. She had been convicted of drunken driving. When she refused to resign, Perry cut the funding.

The mug shot was taken Aug. 19 when Perry was booked on the charges after a grand jury indicted him.

The T-shirt is selling for $25 and proceeds would go to RickPAC, a political action committee formed by the governor. Perry plans to use the committee to donate money to Republican congressional candidates. Those checks will also help Perry build support within the party that could boost a 2016 presidential campaign, which he is considering.
