House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has pledged that illegal immigrants who gain a pathway to citizenship will not receive taxpayer dollars for healthcare.
Speaking to reporters in the Capitol on Thursday, Pelosi said, “It is stated very clearly in the Affordable Care Act, it is our position in the immigration bill: No access to subsidies.”
“Secondly, no access to Medicaid; no cost to the taxpayer,” the Californian added. “That has always been the Democratic position.”
Pelosi was responding to what she called “some misrepresentations reported in the press” that Democratic leaders oppose a draft provision on healthcare in the House immigration bill that would prohibit immigrants on the road to citizenship from getting federally subsidized health care benefits.

“It is a bottom line, no need to even discuss it: no subsidies in the Affordable Care Act, no Medicaid,” she insisted,
according to The Hill.
House Speaker John Boehner meanwhile told The Hill there are “people on both sides of the aisle who’ve done their best to try to undermine their ability to get to an agreement” on immigration.
He warned, though, the House “is going to work its will on immigration. “We’re not going to be stampeded by the White House or stampeded by the president. The Senate is working its will. A lot of good work that’s gone on over there. But the House is going to work its will."
The bipartisan group of eight negotiators in the House was scheduled to meet on Thursday in the hopes of reaching an agreement, although no firm deadline has been set.
