Pawlenty to Newsmax: Romney Will Keep US Off 'Fiscal Cliff'

By    |   Tuesday, 03 July 2012 05:05 PM EDT

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty says Mitt Romney is the only presidential candidate who can keep the United States from falling off a so-called “fiscal cliff” at the end of the year.

“We’re headed for the proverbial train wreck,” he says in an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV. “We have the expiration of the Bush tax-cuts. We have the start of a whole bunch of new Obama tax increases. We have a series of other events, all happening towards the end of this year and early next year, and we need a new president who’s going to stand up and say, Tax increases are not the way forward. It’s going to be more harmful to the economy. It’s the last thing we need right now, more burdens and drags on the economy."

Pawlenty focuses on Romney's ideas for moving forward: “We need a president like Mitt Romney who’s going to say, We’re going to get back to market forces in healthcare. We’re going to get to American energy, and get our costs in manufacturing down by having cheaper, more affordable, more American energy. We’re going to build that Keystone pipeline. We’re going to reduce regulations and make them quicker, lighter, and more pro-investment and pro-job creation.

“That’s the kind of vision that Mitt Romney has. He knows it not because he read it in a book, but because he spent the bulk of his life not in Washington, D.C., but in the private sector.

“He stands in contrast to Barack Obama, who’s presided over tax increases, increases in regulatory burdens, making it more difficult to produce American energy. He tried to have more government-run, centralized, Washington, D.C.-centric healthcare, and down the list."

Pawlenty says Obama's vision "isn’t working. The business leaders, the job providers in this country are saying, Please make the load on us lighter, not heavier. Please do things to encourage us, not discourage us."

He adds that President Obama doesn’t understand that. "He’s heading the country in the wrong direction. He’s had his chance. It’s time for a new president, and that’s Mitt Romney.”
