Conservative Group Backs Papa John’s Over Obamacare

By    |   Friday, 16 November 2012 02:52 PM EST

The conservative group Rebooting America has designated Friday as national appreciation day for Papa John’s, in light of the fact that the pizza chain’s CEO John Schnatter has said the healthcare reform law will cause his company hardship.

Specifically, Obamacare will push Papa John’s prices up by 11 to 14 cents per pizza, and employee hours may have to be cut.

Rebooting America encourages supporters to buy two pizzas, and give the second to an unemployed or homeless person. More than 17,000 Facebook users support the group’s idea and plan to eat at Papa John’s to support its CEO’s stance against Obamacare, Politico reports.

“Schnatter has received intense media scrutiny in addition to being demonized as an evil rich guy by the left,” the event’s Facebook description reads. “Obamacare is a fiscal nightmare, and because of it, many small businesses aren’t hiring now. Some are even closing their doors.”

Rebooting America was formed last Wednesday, following Tuesday’s elections.

“We’re standing up for a business owner that was bold enough to tell investors and the American people that the Affordable Care Act will hurt profits,” the group’s president Justin Charters told Politico.

Meanwhile, John Metz, owner of Hurricane Grill & Wings, says he will place a 5 percent surcharge on every customer’s bill at his restaurant chain to make up for his Obamacare costs.

“If I leave the prices the same, but say on the menu that there is a 5 percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices. They can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare," Metz told The Huffington Post. "Although it may sound terrible that I'm doing this, it's the only alternative. I've got to pass the cost on to the consumer."
