Former President Donald Trump in a robocall Monday to Republican voters in Pennsylvania hammered U.S. Senate primary candidates Kathy Barnette and David McCormick while praising celebrity TV doctor Mehmet Oz, who "really loves our country" and puts America first.
McCormick, he said, is a good person, but "he's an insider who absolutely sold us out to China. We can't have that. China has been ripping us off for a long time until I came along, took in billions and billions of dollars in taxes and tariffs, and a lot of the people, including David, want those tariffs to stop and China to get a free ride."
"We don't want that," said Trump.
Barnette "wanted to build a statue to Barack Hussein Obama and attacked the father of our country, George Washington," said Trump. "That's no good. Now she changes her tune, but these are not candidates who put America first and that's what we need.
"Doctor Mehmet Oz, my friend, I've known him a long time. He's had a tremendously successful show, people love him, otherwise, he wouldn't have been on air for 18 years.
"I've just spent a lot of time with him. I did endorse him, and the reason is he's tough, he's smart, and he really loves our country, and he wants to do a great job for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania."
Oz leads the pack in the race, according to a poll conducted over the weekend. The cardiothoracic surgeon is in the lead with 28% of the vote in the Emerson College Poll, 10 points higher than his showing last month in the same poll.
Conservative commentator Barnette surged to 24% in the poll, up to second place, while former hedge fund CEO McCormick registered third at 21%.
