Liz Cheney: Obama All 'Words,' No Action on Syria

Tuesday, 24 July 2012 07:41 AM EDT

Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Liz Cheney is accusing the Obama administration of walking away from the Syrian conflict, saying all it has in response to the massacres of innocent civilians and Bashar al-Assad’s threat to use chemical weapons “is words.”

“You have a situation now where the Syrian regime seems clearly to be crumbling,” Cheney told Fox News’ Sean Hannity Monday evening. “We’re in a situation where Syria is spinning rapidly out of control and where the only thing this administration seems to be able to muster in response is words.”

“We seem to be doing nothing,” the Fox News contributor and former deputy secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs added. “And now faced with the very real prospect that these weapons could end up in the hands of Hezbollah or could end up in the hands of al-Qaida, [we’re] in a situation that really is one of our worst nightmares. I think it’s clearly time for more action.”

Cheney, however, did not say specifically what kind of action the United States should take. But she suggested that the administration seemed willing to allow Israel, as it has in the past, to lead the way in dealing with the Syrian threat in the region.

“ Once again, you know, you’ve got the real potential that the Israelis may have to take action,” she said. “I keep thinking about the fact that the Israelis did take action, thank goodness, against the Syrian nuclear reactor five years ago.”

But, Cheney added, “It shouldn't be up to the Israelis time and time again to have to stop these very dangerous developments.”

Cheney said the President Barack Obama’s lack of strong leadership in response to the Syrian conflict has hurt U.S. credibility.

“His policies are making that worse as our allies see us heading for the exit at the moment when they are facing grave danger and so are we,” she added.
