Obama Campaign Ad Implies Romney Wouldn’t Have Killed bin Laden

By    |   Friday, 27 April 2012 12:29 PM EDT

President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign has released video from a new ad implying that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney wouldn’t have issued the order to kill terrorist kingpin Osama bin Laden, as Obama did last May.

The video is part of footage for Obama's 17-minute campaign commercial "The Road We've Traveled." It begins with a written message "the Commander-in-Chief gets one chance to make the right decision," Yahoo News reports.

Then former president Bill Clinton appears on screen. "That's one thing George [W.] Bush said that was right: The president is the decider in chief. Nobody can make that decision for you," Clinton says. "Look, he [Obama] knew what would happen," Clinton says.

"Suppose the Navy Seals had gone in there and it hadn't been bin Laden. Suppose they had been captured or killed. The downside would have been horrible for him, but he reasoned 'I cannot in good conscience do nothing.' He took the harder and the more honorable path and the one that produced in my opinion the best result."

Then the text "Which path would Mitt Romney have taken?" appears onscreen. The video includes Romney's comments from an April 2007 interview in which he said, "It’s not worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person."

It doesn’t include the clarification Romney gave a few days later. "We'll move everything to get him,” Romney said in a GOP presidential debate. “This is a global effort we're going to have to lead to overcome this jihadist effort. It's more than Osama bin Laden. But he is going to pay, and he will die."
