Republicans to Obama: ‘No Budget, No Pay’

By    |   Wednesday, 13 March 2013 12:53 PM EDT

House Republicans want to hold back President Barack Obama’s paycheck if he’s late submitting a budget proposal to Congress again by the deadline of the first Monday in February.

Rep. Larry Bucshon Tuesday introduced legislation with four of his GOP colleagues that would put the money in escrow if he fails to meet the deadline, according to The Hill newspaper.

The Indiana lawmaker’s bill is similar to the No Budget, No Pay Act that Obama signed into law earlier this year, which requires the salaries of House and Senate members to be held in escrow if they fail to pass a budget by April 15.

Obama has failed to submit a budget proposal on time in four out of the last five years he’s been in office. According to the White House, his proposal this year won’t arrive until early April, missing the February deadline by two months.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said the lateness of his budget arrival could be disruptive to efforts by the House and Senate to reach a compromise on their own competing budgets, which leaders in both chambers say they hope to pass next week.
