Dick Morris: Immigration Reform Dead

By    |   Tuesday, 06 April 2010 08:28 PM EDT

President Obama has "broken" the American system of providing healthcare and will now be held responsible for spiraling insurance premiums and doctor shortages, according to Fox News commentator and best-selling author Dick Morris.

In an exclusive Newsmax.TV interview, Morris adds that President Obama's
plan to engage in immigration "reform", giving more than 12 million illegals citizenship, is dead.

"I think it's going to animate the whole midterm elections, and I think you're going to see the opposition numbers [against Obama] mount, as layoffs takes place, corporate write downs continue with the costs, and most importantly, as individuals see their premium costs go up," says Morris, author of "2010 Take Back America: A Battle Plan."

"Here Obama has broken the healthcare system, and now any increases in premiums are going to be blamed on him and his healthcare bill," Morris goes on to say. "And then in October the elderly get hit with the Medicare cuts that are scheduled to take effect, and that's also going to be significant, and the deficit will continue to mount. So all of that is bad news for Obama, and I think his negatives over healthcare are just beginning."

Regarding those Medicare cuts, Morris predicts that more doctors, particularly specialists, will stop seeing Medicare patients altogether. "It will be very hard for an elderly person who needs a specialist to stay alive to find one to treat them, unless he's willing to pay out of pocket, or through his health insurance," he says.

Other highlights of the exclusive Newsmax.TV interview:
  • Morris says embattled RNC chairman Michael Steele is wrong to blame his problems on race. "My criticism isn't particularly about Steele," Morris says. "It's about the RNC institutionally. They are a giant factory that takes in a huge amount of Republican money, and wastes most of it on high-paid consultants and an extensive staff, and ridiculously high fund-raising costs… They suck up a vast amount of money and they waste it. That's what my criticism is. I don't care what color the chairman is. He hasn't changed it, and it's a waste."
  • Polls show that Democrats have begun to lose to Republicans in terms of which party is better able to manage core Democratic issues: The economy, healthcare, and education. The bestselling pundit says that spells big trouble for Democrats who have to face the voters in November.
  • Immigration reform won't pass this year. "I think McCain would normally be the lead on it, because he's a high enough profile Republican figure to offer the Democrats cover. But he's not going to do it this year because J.D. Hayworth, a former congressman, is running a primary against him. And Hayward's big issue is immigration," Morris says. He adds that Democrats have enough votes to pass immigration reform, "But they don't dare do it without a Republican co-sponsor. They need to make it bipartisan, so they don't get blamed for passing the bill. They want the credit with the Hispanics, but not the blame with the rest of the America people."
  • He expects that voter approval of the tea party movement will continue to swell. Attempts to demonize tea party members will fail, he predicts.
  • Controversial Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Fla., is in trouble. Morris calls him "one of those freshman Democrats that needs to go." Morris adds that Grayson is "on everybody targeted list.
