Most National Rifle Association members support comprehensive background checks for those buying a firearm, a new poll showed.

A Monmouth University survey released Thursday finds 69 percent of NRA members support comprehensive background checks.

Among gun owners not in the organization, 78 percent support requiring background checks for all firearm purchases, while among non-gun owners, 89 percent favor requiring such checks, the survey found.

On the issue of creating a national gun registry, 57 percent of NRA members strongly oppose the idea, while just 31 percent support it, according to the Monmouth poll.

However, 52 percent of gun owners not affiliated with the NRA back the registry proposal, and 79 percent of non-gun owners also support establishing such a database.

"There is widespread public support for background checks and even establishing a national gun registry," Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement. "This includes most gun owners, unless they are affiliated with the NRA."
