NOAA: 2,185 Cold Records Broken or Tied in 7-Day Period

The United States recently saw 2,185 daily record cold temperatures either broken or tied, according to statistics from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The blog "Sunshine Hours"  and website Climate Depot  reported the statistics.

In the period February 19-25, 1,913 record lows were broken and 272 were tied, according to the data.

A map pinpointing the locations of the lows shows most clustered along the East Coast from southern Maine to northern Florida, extending westward to Minnesota, Missouri and Alabama.

Mount Sterling, Kentucky hit -27 on February 20. The previous record for that date was -3 in 1896.

The largest swing in the seven day period was 38 degrees on February 22 in Cynthiana, Kentucky. The area hit -23 that day, beating the previous record of 15 from 1988.

The top 10 records broken during the period were in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee.

Other areas reporting record lows included Washington, D.C., which is typically one of the warmer cities in the area, The Washington Post noted. The nation's capital was 5 degrees on February 20, beating a 120-year record. It was the first record low in winter since 1994, the Post reported.

In New York City, it was the coldest February in 81 years and the third-coldest since records have been kept, UPI reported.
